I think the community service approach is right...I'm sure it would be a service to the community of Southlake that he's forced to washed the Hummers of everyone in the city government. Or force him to work in a papermill where he'll see the senseless destruction of mother nature herself. Maybe throw a tickertape parade for the football team...having the tickertape composed of shredded Sierra Club and Greenpeace membership cards and have him at the tail of the parade, broom in hand. I'm sure the swell folks there will find something for him.

Paul,

I think your idea would be a good start, but I do think some sort of jail time--maybe 6 months to a year--would also do a good job of sending a strong message to others who might try more extreme measures of eco-terrorism. If scratching an "X" into a Hummer will get you a year in jail, what could burning down a house get you?

Again, this assumes that eco-terrorists use logic, which I don't think they do many times.

I think paying for the 5 Hummers he vandalized ($2,200 each x 5 = $11,000) plus 12 months of community service would be fair.
